                             MSc Global Water Sustainability

What inspires, motivates, or gets you excited about your job on a daily basis?

Anglian Water’s assets include a network of 36,800km of water mains, around 1,000 water recycling centres and over 4,000 pumping stations. What motivates me most about being on the Asset Management Graduate Programme is knowing that these physical assets are critical in achieving our business goals; what I do matters. The performance of our assets directly affects the services we can provide to our customers and the efficiency with which we operate.

Having the opportunity to understand the costs and risks associated with assets through their lifetime, innovating new sustainable ways of working, and planning future investment programmes to ensure we meet customer demand; all in the face of climate change and population growth, is undeniably an exciting challenge.

What have been the biggest challenges you have faced so far in the role?

One of the biggest challenges I faced when starting on the graduate scheme was learning to appreciate the size of the company; there are so many different business units and teams! However the projects I have been given, coupled with the flexibility of the programme, has allowed me to develop a variety of contacts in different areas of the business. These networking opportunities are crucial to finding out where people fit in to the business and learning about their roles.

How did you arrive at your present post?

The decision to undertake an MSc in a water-related discipline fuelled my desire to pursue a career in the water industry – but the question was which area and what organisation? I decided to apply for Anglian Water’s Graduate Management scheme as it was unrivalled in its structure and in the opportunities to develop skills and leadership behaviours.

Anglian Water also matched my desire to work for a company which provided an essential service to its customers. The company stood out as one which actively engages with its customers through its Love Every Drop campaign, which aims to put water at the heart of a whole new way of living.
