BSc Geography - Loughborough University

What inspires, motivates, or gets you excited about your job on a daily basis?

Water and Water Recycling are vital to our everyday lives and I think a lot of people take that for granted, so it’s great being a part of Anglian Water and understanding what goes on in a water company. It’s so rewarding when you are involved in an important project and are able to deliver something that really makes a difference.

What have been the biggest challenges you have faced so far in the role?

One of the main challenges I have faced on the scheme is starting new placements and quickly trying to gain an understanding of that area of the business, the systems they use and the processes involved. Every team has their own way of working and therefore it’s important to respect that and find effective ways of communicating with everyone.

It is always challenging knowing who you need to talk to within the business to find out information relating to the work you’re doing, but everyone I’ve come across within the business are more than willing to help, and if they don’t know the answer they more than likely know the name of someone that does!

How did you arrive in your present post?

In my final year at university I felt under pressure to have a job waiting once I’d graduated so I was applying to all sorts of graduate schemes, and different roles, some of which I knew weren’t right for me, yet I still applied! After a couple of months of online applications, online tests, etc. with no luck, I took a step back and really thought about what I wanted to do for a career. I realised I wanted to do something related to my degree and I wanted variety where I could learn whilst doing something practical.

This is when I came across the Anglian Water graduate scheme advert online and it looked like a great opportunity. A lot of other schemes I had seen put you in a specific role straight away whereas Anglian Water allows you to have various placements around different areas of the business. This allows you to learn not only about the key areas of the business, water and wastewater but how the wider business works as a whole.
